The number of ways a person can invest his money is almost infinite. Just about any enterprise that anyone is engaged in anywhere is subject to the possibility of investment. There are the simple ways of investing that everyone has heard of. There are the stock and bond markets. But within this category are a slew of options, including something called options. There are mutual funds, mortgages, hedge funds, pension funds, commodities, financial derivatives and foreign exchange markets. Let’s not leave out real estate as an investment, both commercial as well as residential. There is venture capital, rare metals like gold and silver and commodities. Some of these investments are highly volatile and should be avoided by the squeamish or those that cannot afford a sudden reduction in the value of their capital investment.
Some investments feel more like gambling, but upon closer scrutiny might not be anymore risky than some of the riskier but more acceptable forms of investment. Those with some extra cash and an adventurous personality might want to consider buying, or going partners in the purchase of a race horse. Now there is something that does not feel like an investment, but it certainly is. Just be aware that this is the kind of investment that takes nerves of steel, the ability to tolerate a high chance of loss of capital, but offers hours of fun and interest. Not quite putting money in your piggy bank, but the rewards can be spectacular.
